Abstract:
This paper presents a comparative study on the longitudinal dynamic behavior of a car suspension system using the quarter and half car model in terms of accuracy. Mathematical equations modeling the suspension system are derived and numerically solved using Matlab/Simulink to simulate the vibrations of the car with different bump signal inputs. The simulation results show that although there are ignorable differences in the vibration of unsprung masses between quarter and half car models, the dynamic behavior of the sprung masses is found to be different in these two models. It is also observed that although the vibrational amplitude of sprung masses in the first cycle in the half car model is a little larger than that in the quarter car model due to mutual influence on each other between front and rear sprung masses, it starts to reduce more rapidly from the third cycle. In addition, the vibrational frequency of sprung masses tends to be higher in the half car model.
