Simulation of the behavior of ultra high strength concrete (UHSC) filled in steel tube columns under axial compression

Abstract:
Concrete filled steel tube columns (CFST) using UHSC (Ultra-high performance concrete) has been a new
trend in civil engineering. This paper is aimed at presenting the finite element method (FEM) using ABAQUS
software to verify some previous test results of circular UHSC filled steel tube columns under axial
compression. The material models of UHSC and steel tube were suggested to modify the conventional models
in ABAQUS software. The research finding from the paper indicates that there is a good agreement between
the FEM results and the experiments with regard to the failure modes and the curves of load versus strain.
Furthermore, the distribution of total load on the steel tube and the UHSC core of each load increment can be
predicted by the FEM.
