Abstract:
The content of this article is to present a method of calculation for transfer beam supporting shear wall by using the strut-and-tie model as defined in the American Standard ACI 318-14. This article will apply this method of calculation to a transfer beam supporting shear wall in a real project. The main thrust of this method is to select an optimized strut-and-tie model consisting of struts, ties, and reasonable nodal zones. The strut-and-tie model therefore will be able to carry tensile stress, compressive stress in discontinued zones – zones having non-linear behavior. In addition, in order to check the strength of the ties and nodal zones it is required to determine accurately the width of the nodal zones according to the geometrical conditions. The results of this method are compared with those obtained from the technical design documentation of a project to affirm the accuracy between theory and reality.
